We Buy These Silver Eagles
Different Silver Eagle types are priced differently depending on condition, packaging, quantity, and market demand.
How We Price Silver Eagles
American Silver Eagle pricing is based on live silver spot and the current Silver Eagle market premium. Common bullion Eagles, proof Eagles, graded Eagles, burnished Eagles, sealed tubes, and special issues may all price differently. Quantity matters too — tubes, sealed boxes, and larger lots can move differently than single random coins. For the most accurate quote, text photos and the quantity you have.
About the American Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle has been produced by the U.S. Mint since 1986. It contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and carries a $1 USD face value.
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design. From 1986 through early 2021, the reverse featured a heraldic eagle with a shield. In 2021, the U.S. Mint introduced a new reverse showing an eagle landing with an oak branch — known as the Type 2. Coins from 1986 through early 2021 are Type 1.
Three versions exist: bullion, proof, and uncirculated. The bullion Eagle is the standard investment coin. Proof and uncirculated versions are collector coins with different finishes, packaging, and pricing.
Our Take
Silver Eagles are one of the easiest silver coins to buy or sell in the U.S. Most dealers recognize them immediately, and that recognition helps liquidity. The tradeoff is premium — Eagles often cost more than Silver Maples, Britannias, generic rounds, or bars with the same silver content.
If you want highly recognized silver that is easy to resell in the U.S., Silver Eagles make sense. If your only goal is the lowest cost per ounce, generic silver rounds or silver bars may be the better buy.
Silver Eagles vs Other Silver
Silver Eagles are not always the cheapest way to buy silver. The right choice depends on whether you care more about recognition, resale demand, or lowest cost per ounce.
| Product | U.S. Recognition | Typical Premium | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Silver Eagle | Very high | Usually higher | Liquidity and U.S. market recognition |
| Canadian Silver Maple | High | Often lower than Eagles | Sovereign silver at a lower premium |
| Generic Silver Round | Medium | Usually lowest | Cheapest 1 oz silver exposure |
| Silver Bar | Medium to high | Low to medium | Bulk silver stacking |
Premiums are relative and change with market conditions.
Common Mistakes When Selling Silver Eagles
Assuming every Silver Eagle gets the same premium
A random-year bullion Eagle, a proof Eagle, and a graded MS-70 Eagle are priced very differently. Describe exactly what you have before asking for a number.
Treating proof Eagles like common bullion Eagles
Proof Silver Eagles have a different market than bullion and may price higher depending on condition and year. Don't accept a generic bullion rate for proof coins.
Cleaning coins before selling
Cleaning damages coins and can reduce value significantly, especially on proof or graded examples. Bring them in as-is.
Comparing retail asking prices to dealer buy prices
Online retail ask prices include margin. A dealer's buy price reflects their costs, inventory, and resale market. It is not the same as an online retail asking price.
Not separating your coins by type
Loose bullion Eagles, sealed tubes, proof Eagles, and graded coins each price differently. Sorting before you call gets you a faster, more accurate quote.
Assuming older dates are automatically rare
Most Silver Eagle dates are common bullion dates. Older does not automatically mean rare. Premium usually depends more on condition, packaging, grading, special issue status, and current demand.

Type 1 Silver Eagles use the original heraldic eagle reverse design from 1986 through early 2021. Type 2 Silver Eagles use the newer reverse introduced in 2021, showing an eagle landing with an oak branch. Both contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
Bullion Silver Eagles are investment coins struck for silver content and sold through dealers at spot plus a market premium. Proof Silver Eagles are collector coins with polished dies and a mirror finish. They do not trade at the same price — always tell your dealer which type you have.
Text photos of the front and back of your coins along with the quantity, whether they are loose or in tubes, and whether any are proof, graded, or boxed. The more detail you can provide, the more accurate the estimate.
